Risk factors can mean increased likelihood of divorce

It takes a lot of hard work to make a marriage last. In many cases, however, all the hard work in the world is for naught. Some marriages are simply mismatches of two good people unsuited for each other. Other marriages that end in divorce might have never had a chance because of risk factors associated with one spouse or the other -- or both.

It should be noted that risk factors are not themselves the cause of divorces. Also, even if you find a risk factor or two present in your marriage, it does not mean that your union will inevitably wind up in a Broward County courtroom.

The Huffington Post's list of 10 Things That Make You More Likely To Get Divorce includes some of the following:

  • Your parents were divorced: it is simply statistically true that children of divorced parents are more likely to themselves get divorced. And there might be nothing whatsoever to be done about that, according to a recent study in Psychological Science which suggests the trend is more likely due to nature than nurture.
  • You are sexy: believe it or not, but researchers recently published a paper that says physically attractive partners have a hard time staying together. The thinking is apparently that attractive folks have more opportunities to stray and are therefore more likely to give in to temptation.
  • You have gone through a divorce: about 35 percent of first marriages don't make it to a tenth anniversary, according to government data. About 40 percent of second marriages also end in divorce before 10 years are up.

Even if you find that you have none of the listed risk factors in your marriage, you can still wind up in difficult disputes over child custody and support, property division, spousal support and more.

An experienced family law attorney will help you protect your rights, interests and family at every step of the legal process.
